Georgetown, 1 Aug– 2nd SeaShorts Film Festival kicked off today at Hin Bus Depot in Georgetown, Penang with the opening event, ‘My Student Films’ featuring 7 short films made during student days of these award winning filmmakers namely i)SURABAYA JOHNNY by Dain Said/Malaysia (Westminster University, UK, 1990); ii) WAGON 1, 2, 3 GERBONG/ 1, 2, 3 by Garin Nugroho/Indonesia (Jakarta Institute of Arts, Indonesia, 1985); iii) DON’T PLAY PLAY by: Liew Seng Tat/Malaysia (Multimedia University, Malaysia, 2002); iv) G-23 by Anthony Chen/Singapore (Ngee Ann Polytechnic, Singapore, 2005); v) APPLE by Sherad Anthony Sanchez/Phillippines (Ateneo De Manila University. Philippines, 2005); vi) A VERY BORING CONVERSATION by Edwin/Indonesia (Jakarta Institute of Arts, Indonesia, 2006) and vii) MOTORCYCLE by Aditya Assarat/Thai (University of Southern California School of Cinematic Arts, US, 2000).

Organized by Next New Wave with the support of Japan Foundation Asia Centre, Yayasan Sime Darby and National Film Development Corporation Malaysia (FINAS), SeaShorts Film Festival 2018 which runs officially from August 1st – 5th 2018 in conjunction and in partnership with George Town Festival, aims to celebrate the voices of aspiring young filmmakers and to embrace into cinematic excellence of 120 short films across Southeast Asia.

While SeaShorts Competition recognizes the most promising filmmaker competing for Purin Pictures’ Purin Award worth USD2,500, Next New Wave Competition has become another significant platform in the festival aims to lure young and growing talents in Malaysia.
